What’s the appeal?

R and I were watching the news last night when the story about the gridlock around Shop Rite came on. People were so excited for the opening of the new store, they jammed up the streets and the parking lot.

“Ohh, I’m going to have to check that out,” I said.

“Why do you need another grocery store,” R asked. “First it was all Price Chopper, then you added Fresh Market into your shopping and now I see Hannaford bags in the closet. Are you really going to shop at four stores?”

He forgot Wal-Mart (and the lines), I thought, but didn’t say, the fact that I’ve said often I plan to add Trader Joe’s into the mix when they open also slipped his mind. Bringing those up wasn’t going to help my position. So, I just answered his final, direct question.

“Um, yes,” I said, without any explanation because, really, I didn’t know why I want to — or need to — go to Shop Rite. In fact, the Shop Rite in New Paltz was the store my mom shopped at before we moved to Averill Park. That was a long time ago, but I remember the store being dingy and dark. I still drive by there often, and the store looks just as depressing.

So R’s probably right (not that I’d tell him as much ). I get most of what I need at PC — along with the (now-altered) gas points. For produce, meat and some cheeses I head over the Fresh Market. Hannaford is reserved for when I need gluten-free items for guests (and then just do the rest of my shopping over there), or shaved steak. I’m a sucker for a shaved steak sandwich, and they are the only meat case in the area that sells the beef (that I’ve noticed).

So, really, what will Shop Rite offer that I can’t get in my already-established rotation.

Even now, a day later, I can’t answer that question, but I know they’ve got something the other biggies don’t, or people wouldn’t be waiting in backups and standing in ridiculous lines just to get in.
