NolaPro Free Accounting

CNET Editors’ review

by: CNET staff on July 19, 2011

Noguska’s NolaPro Free Accounting is actually a powerful freeware business suite that uses the Apache and cloud-based tools. It runs securely online from your home or work PC or any server or workstation. It not only handles business accounting but also payrolls, order tracking, inventories, point-of-sales, business-to-business, and other important functions, and it includes not only a full database but also a time clock, hosting manager, development API, and online shopping cart. It can handle all kinds of taxes, including VAT, and it integrates with many third-party applications, add-ons, and plug-ins. It can be widely customized to suit virtually any business or industry requirement.

NolaPro is a substantial download, with a self-extracting installer that scanned our system to verify that we had all the required PHP extensions and configuration settings, including MySQL. The Web-based setup wizard requires Internet Explorer, too. We accepted the MySQL defaults, and the installer set up and configured our database, explaining the various options and requirements at each point. We were required to enter company, sales tax, and checking account info to set up the database, though of course we could edit it later. We logged in to the main page, which offered a toolbar accessing online tools for Orders, Billing, Inventory, Payables, Payroll, Ledger, and Admin, and a main field filled with all kinds of help, support, add-ons, and even premium secure hosting options. The program offers digital and print manuals, text-based help, page-specific help, a video training library, and a PDF-based quick-start guide, which we opened.

NolaPro’s tools open left-hand control consoles and use familiar Web-based entry fields and large, clearly labeled buttons and icons to handle a huge amount of business-related functions. Under Admin, the Admin Setup button gave us access to everything from B2B Site Graphics to Home Page Caching, OSC Commerce Integration, and User Rights Groups. It’s a lot, especially for freeware, and we agree with Noguska’s advisory: You really do need to try it to see what it is and how it works. But anyone looking for a comprehensive business software solution that offers secure cloud-based access from just about anywhere needs to check it out.

      “Don’t know”

      January 12, 2012  |   By Ryschool

      Version: NolaPro Free Accounting 5.0.8105

      Pros

      Don’t know;

      Cons

I downloaded the program started installation then it said I needed MySQL account and takes me to their site to download something else. That was fine. Once I get that downloaded it says installation of that can’t proceed without downloading C++ or something. Too much extra cr@p to download. I need simple.

      Summary

      I need a simpler option

      Version: NolaPro Free Accounting 5.0.8105

      Pros

I have been using it for a few days now and it looks like it will work well for my business. Good number of reports and I like the inventory features.

      Cons

Nothing major so far. Some learning time but I had that with my previous software as well.

      “Satisfied customer”

      December 16, 2011  |   By awilson211

      Version: NolaPro Free Accounting 5.0.8049

      Pros

Easy to set up. Using any new software takes some learning time and the support staff answered my questions in a very reasonable timeframe.

      Cons

None for me. I had an error with one of my invoices but discovered it was due to something I hadn’t set up.

      Summary

I’ve tried many of the free accounting programs and this has the most available features by far. While the add-ons are extra they are a reasonable one-time fee. Definately worth a look.

      “Awesome product”

      December 7, 2011  |   By jay_90012

      Version: NolaPro Free Accounting 5.0.7959

      Pros

Installed easily. Once I started looking at the reports I was surprised to see the number of options avaialble. The text-based help was useful. I recommend using the quick start guide to make sure you get to the most important setup screens.

      Cons

Just started using it so not much yet. I was used to my other software so it’s a minor adjustment but is far less expensive.

      Summary

Try it out. If you are paying for yearly upgrades it could save you a lot.

“I’m not sure what is wrong with the developers…”

      November 23, 2011  |   By reviewer78923

      Version: NolaPro Free Accounting 5.0.7959

      Pros

      None [10 characters]

      Cons

I downloaded this from seeing the great “review” and it was free. It took about 3 minutes to install, and when I first clicked the icon on the desktop it brought me to a website. It turns out the whole program is a website, so I’m not sure why I had to download it (????)

Then it started saying things about My_SQL, a programming language and said I needed to download it and enter MySQL account password. What is this? I then did all of that and went on their program which is actually a website and it said you had to log in and I had no account. Underneath it said for demo account, type demo and pass.

      Summary

This whole thing is a lie and it wasted 15 minutes of my life.

      Pros

Easy to install. The setup to-do list was helpful in getting my accounts set up.

      Cons

I would have liked a few more invoice formatting options but the ones included are sufficient and I can add my own logo.

      Cons

Just getting started so I haven’t found much yet.

      “Does nothing on Windows XP”

      September 8, 2011  |   By keglined

      Version: NolaPro Free Accounting 5.0.7591

      Pros

      Free and uninstallable

      Cons

I suspect it won’t work with IE version 8, which would mean it is NOT compatible with XP.

      Summary

This software requires you to log into Nola’s server and build your data via/on their cloud-based program/database. OK, fine. Nola will only run with IE. I generally avoid IE, but have the latest version (8) that Windows XP will support, since many websites require it. So again, fine.

However, once I’m signed in (with the trial user name and password) I can do almost nothing via the Nola webpage/interface. Drop-down menus work, but their links take me nowhere/do nothing.

One of the few links that works is that to “Text Help,” which strangely opens a pop-up window with navigating arrows that do nothing, and one button that says “Table of Contents.” Clicking that button takes me a a screen where one choice is “FAQ.”

Most FAQs are accounting-specific questions, but one that seemed similar to my problem reads, “Why is it when I go to the URL for my trial website the screen appears blank?”

Hilariously, the one-line response to this question — remember, you’re in a pop-up window — says, “You must enable pop-ups for your browser to view NolaPro.”

Nevertheless, I bent over backwards doing everything I could to make IE think I LOVED and DESIRE every single pop-up thrown at me. Still, nothing.

Pop-up blocker is NOT on, reboot/restart of IE and a complete reset to default settings did nothing to help.

So I’ve been unable to do anything except access four support functions, all of which lead nowhere. Oh yeah, there is a PDF user guide that will tell you how to populate your database. That’s assuming your browser can do something with the links on those drop-down menus.

      Moving on now.
