Intel Expects PCs to Help Chip Gains

Intel Corp. dodged much of the damage from a shortage of disk drives in the first quarter, pointing on Tuesday to sales gains ahead for personal computers despite stiff competition from tablet-style devices.

The semiconductor maker, whose microprocessors supply the calculating power for most PCs, reported that its first-quarter profit declined 13% on revenue that rose less than a percentage point. But sales were a bit stronger than the company and analysts had forecast, as were the company’s predictions about the second period.
