STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The grinch who stole a Christmas tree from a West Brighton computer store may not really be a grinch at all, but a troubled resident of a nearby home for adults who, sadly, might have been in need of some holiday spirit.
Adam Menoni, owner of Qualitech Computers, said he was told by a supervisor at the home that the man responsible for taking the tree was heartbroken by his actions.
“He said he wants to reimburse me for the tree and the guy is very upset and wants to write a letter apologizing,” Menoni said. “I felt bad as soon as he told me.”
Last Friday, surveillance cameras at Qualitech caught a bald-headed man who was smoking a cigarette walk away with a small, artificial Christmas tree.
He is shown on the grainy security footage leaning down, unplugging the tree, and making off with it.
But Menoni is a man with a heart and carries no hard feelings after hearing the story told by the adult home staff.
“The supervisor said he was crying and felt bad,” he said.
“I don’t want to call the cops. I think they said it was in his room or he gave it to someone. I just want people in the neighborhood to know, in case they get worried, not to be worried.”
